Discovery Weekend, Lent 2002

"Come and join us for Discovery Weekend, the next time we have one, all are invited and you can bring a friend."

From March 2002 Saints' Alive:

As a parish and individually we all are on a spiritual journey. There are many steps on the way in this journey and because of our commitment as Christians we are asked at various times in this journey to share our experiences with others and they with us. Discovery Weekend is simply a sharing.  A sharing through scripture and personal stories the commitment to Christ within All Saints' community. Discovery Weekend is scheduled for March 15 & 16. It starts at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening and ends Saturday about 5:30 p.m.

The Discovery Weekend is based on the very practical fact that Christianity is caught not taught. It is a group activity of discipleship by an entire parish. Lay persons and clergy work together as a team, openly, to share their faith, commitment, and lives with those inquiring about the church and those wanting to renew their faith through the weekend experience.

The weekend is divided into 5 well-defined sections with specific objectives. The units are: Aloneness, Grace, Spiritual Journeys, Trust and Love. The sessions are to be led by clergy and lay persons alike.  This is a spiritual opportunity. We are asked over and over to invest in our future-Discovery Weekend is an investment in your spiritual future.

Friday's supper and Saturday's breakfast and lunch, plus snacks will be provided. So you don't have to be concerned about meals. Day Care will be available, too.

What this weekend needs is you. There are many ways to participate  by just attending; to being on the support staff; either way, it is a worthy investment. In order to plan the logistics of meals and day care, please inform the church office (586-6201) or me, Larry McGowan by March 10 if you plan to attend. If you have any questions please give me a call.

From April 2002 Saints' Alive:

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
We experienced a blessed Discovery Weekend on March 15 and 16. People have been asking about it, because they have heard good reports. People also want to know a little more about the weekend.

The weekend starts on Friday night with supper, one needs to plan on being present for all sessions, with the focus that evening being on our journey in relationship to God. We hear about the separation that grips us all, and the pain that comes from being used by others. We have time to express some of the thoughts and feelings we have about our life of aloneness, as we live with sin and separation. We spend time in the church to hear stories from the Bible about people who have had similar experiences to ours.

On Saturday after breakfast we begin to hear about God's action in relationship to us. We have members of the congregation telling us about God's grace and love and the journey of faith that is lived out in forgiveness, trust, and love. We focus on our unity in God and end with the Eucharist.

The weekend is full of faith stories of real people. You find yourself identifying with the stories, it seems that one hears the story at just the right time, and they are the stories that you will take with you for the rest of your life. We are blessed with people who have been givers and receivers of God's grace, and who are willing to share so that others may grow and be strengthened in their faith.

The weekend is interwoven with music, laughter, and someone else keeping track of the time. One can be free for a while in the presence of others, to be fed with a fellowship that renews, gives hope and grows love.

Come and join us for Discovery Weekend, the next time we have one, all are invited and you can bring a friend.
Love, Phil
